What Irish teachers should know first

Dubai’s rules are written down, and they are stricter than most guides admit. Under the KHDA School Teacher Recruitment and Mobility Policy Guidelines (2025), every teacher other than those working with children under 36 months must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree at QF Emirates Level 6, and no one may start work without a valid UAE residence visa and an Appointment Notice issued by KHDA. Your qualifications must be fully attested, and you must supply police clearance from every country you have lived in over the past five years, plus your home country if you lived there in the last ten. Newly qualified teachers with no prior experience can be appointed, but only if they complete at least six months of supervised teaching practice. In Dubai law this sits under Administrative Resolution No. 54 of 2025 on the appointment of school staff in private schools, which also requires a certificate of good conduct, medical fitness and a signed undertaking to the professional code of conduct.

Separately, the UAE Ministry of Education operates a mandatory Education Professional Licence for anyone working in education, obtained by passing the assessments set for your category. The official UAE government platform is explicit that teachers must hold this licence to work legally, that you get three attempts, and that after three failures you must wait six months before retesting, with training available in the meantime. For an Irish applicant the practical reading is that a degree plus an accredited TEFL qualification opens the door, but the licence and the KHDA notice are what actually let you stand in front of a class.

On pay, be careful with the numbers you see quoted. Neither KHDA nor the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation publishes an official salary band for teachers, so we do not present one as a government statistic. What we can state plainly is the range commonly advertised for English teaching roles in Dubai: AED 8,000 to AED 15,000 a month, which converts to roughly €1,870 to €3,510 using the dirham’s official peg of 3.6725 AED to the US dollar and the ECB euro reference rate of 1.1645 USD, giving 4.2766 AED to the euro.
