Teaching for pay on a tourist stamp is not a grey area in Ecuadorian law, it is outside it. The route to legal work is the visa de residencia temporal de trabajo por actividades laborales bajo relación de dependencia, granted by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Movilidad Humana. It requires a passport with at least six months’ validity, an acción de personal or contrato de trabajo from the employing school, and an original police clearance certificate covering your country of origin and anywhere you have lived in the past five years, translated and apostilled, and no more than 180 days old at the point you last entered Ecuador. For an Irish applicant that means getting a Garda vetting or police certificate apostilled before you fly, not after you arrive, because the 180-day clock is tight.
On money, the statutory floor is worth knowing because local-contract teaching often sits close to it. Ecuador’s Salario Básico Unificado for 2026 is USD 482 a month, set by the Ministerio del Trabajo in Acuerdo Ministerial MDT-2025-195 and agreed, unusually, by tripartite consensus between government, employers and unions. Types of teaching jobs
Private Language Schools
A good starting point for English teachers in Ecuador if you do not have a degree is to speak to one of the private language schools. They are more laid back and will likely employ you even if you have no qualifications, provided they like your attitude. The pay reflects the lack of qualifications, and you will probably only be offered $3-$5 an hour.
International Schools

This will bring your living costs down to an easily affordable level. Ecuador is an exciting place to live, but you have to remember that the crime rates can be a little higher than in some locations, so take care to protect yourself; pickpocketing is one of the most likely crimes, so only take your possessions out if it is needed.
