Georgia has one of the easiest legal entry routes in TEFL for Irish citizens: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia lists the Republic of Ireland among the nationalities admitted visa-free for one full year. Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs rates Georgia Normal Precautions, its lowest of four ratings, in advice updated 16 January 2026.

What Irish teachers should know first

The visa position is the genuine advantage here, so get it right. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia publishes a list of nationals who may enter and stay in Georgia visa-free for one full year, and the Republic of Ireland is on it; the same one-year period appears on the visa-free list published by Georgia’s State Commission on Migration Issues. A full 365 days without a visa application is unusual, and it means an Irish teacher can arrive, look for work in person and take a first contract without a sponsor lined up in advance. Visa-free entry is not the same as permission to settle. Georgia’s Public Service Development Agency (sda.gov.ge) states that a work residence permit is issued to a foreign national engaged in entrepreneurial activity in Georgia, or to an immigrant worker registered with the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs under the procedures set in Georgian law. The Agency also states that an alien must apply for a Georgian residence permit forty calendar days before their lawful stay expires. If you intend to stay past the visa-free year, that forty-day deadline is the date to put in your calendar on arrival, not the one you discover in month twelve.

On safety, Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs operates a four-tier scale — Normal Precautions, High Degree of Caution, Avoid Non-Essential Travel, Do Not Travel. Georgia currently sits at Normal Precautions, the lowest tier, with advice updated 16 January 2026 and marked still current at 16 August 2026. The Department notes that countries at this rating have a security environment similar to Ireland’s but that local laws and customs may differ significantly.
