Yes, and Egypt is the least restrictive of the Arabic-speaking markets Irish teachers usually ask about. Egypt’s National Council of Wages set the private-sector minimum wage at EGP 7,000 a month from 1 March 2025, and Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs rates Egypt High Degree of Caution rather than the stiffer warnings applied to the Gulf.

What Irish teachers should know first

The most useful officially set number in this market is the wage floor. Egypt’s National Council of Wages, chaired by the Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, raised the minimum wage for private-sector workers to EGP 7,000 a month with effect from 1 March 2025. In the same decision it set the annual periodic raise for private-sector employees at a minimum of three per cent of the social insurance wage with a floor of EGP 250 a month, and for the first time set a minimum hourly rate for part-time work, at a base of EGP 28 an hour. That last figure matters more to teachers than it sounds, because a great deal of language-school work in Cairo and Alexandria is paid by the hour rather than by salary. It is a legal floor, not a market rate, but it is the only Egyptian teaching-relevant number we can put a government source against.

On sponsorship, Egypt is a different animal to the Gulf. There is no kafala-style exit permit here: your right to leave the country is not in your employer’s gift the way it historically was in Qatar or Saudi Arabia. What Egypt does require is a work permit obtained through the labour ministry before a foreign national may lawfully work, alongside a residence status that permits employment. We are being deliberately careful about the detail of that process, because Egypt’s Ministry of Labour portal did not return readable content to us on the review date of 8 September 2026, and every specific we could find on permit conditions, quotas on foreign staff and documentation came from private law firms rather than from the ministry. Those summaries may well be right. We are not going to present them as official. Ask your prospective school to show you, in writing, which permit they are applying for and who is paying for it, and verify it with the Egyptian Embassy before you travel.

On currency, we are giving you Egyptian pounds and no euro figure. The Egyptian pound is not covered by European Central Bank reference rates and, unlike the Gulf riyals, it is not pegged to a hard currency at a published official rate, so it floats. Any euro conversion we printed would be approximate at the moment of writing and misleading a month later. The EGP figures above are the reliable ones. Convert on the day, at your own bank’s rate, and build in the fact that the pound has moved a great deal in recent years.

There is also no audited salary figure for English teachers in Egypt on any official record we could find, from the Ministry of Labour, the National Council of Wages or the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics. That absence is worth stating plainly: every specific monthly teaching salary you will see quoted for Egypt is somebody’s estimate from job adverts. Egypt is a market where the cost of living, not the headline salary, is what makes the year work, and you should assess an offer against local rents and the EGP 7,000 floor rather than against a number you saw on a list.

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs rates Egypt High Degree of Caution — level two of its four security ratings — on advice still current at 17 August 2026 and last updated on 2 March 2026. That is a meaningfully lower rating than the Avoid Non-Essential Travel warnings the Department currently applies to Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, and it is one of the honest reasons an Irish teacher might choose Egypt over the Gulf. The DFA also publishes general guidance that matters to some readers more than others: its Local Laws and Customs page notes that homosexuality and homosexual activity is illegal in many countries and that public drinking is often prohibited; its LGBTIQ+ page notes that a same-sex partnership may not be recognised while travelling and that penalties can be heavy where such relations are unlawful; and its guidance for female travellers notes that seeking redress for violence can be substantially harder under some local laws.
