TEFL jobs in Hungary
A complete guide for TEFL teachers on teaching English in Hungary
Overview
Hungary’s statutory minimum wage is HUF 322,800 gross a month from 1 January 2026, and HUF 373,200 for jobs requiring at least a secondary qualification (Government Decree 426/2025). Irish teachers need no visa and no work permit: as EU citizens you can take a Hungarian teaching post outright.
What Irish teachers should know first
The biggest single difference between you and the American or British reader most Hungary guides are written for is that you do not need anyone’s permission to work. Ireland is an EU member state, so freedom of movement applies: there is no visa application, no work permit, no employer sponsorship and no minimum salary threshold to clear before a school can hire you.
You do, however, have to register. Hungary’s National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing states that EEA nationals must notify their residence to the regional directorate with jurisdiction over their address by the ninety-third day from the date of entry, and are then issued a registration certificate. That is an administrative formality rather than a permission, but it is not optional if you are staying for a school year.
On pay, Hungary sets two statutory floors rather than one. Government Decree 426/2025 (XII. 23.), published on Hungary’s Nemzeti Jogszabálytár, fixes the minimum wage at HUF 322,800 gross per month from 1 January 2026, and the guaranteed wage minimum — which applies to posts requiring at least a secondary school or vocational qualification — at HUF 373,200 gross per month. Those are legal minimums for any employed role in the country, not a prediction of what a language school will offer you. We do not publish an average TEFL salary for Hungary because we could not source one to an official Hungarian body; ask any employer to put the gross monthly figure in writing before you accept.
One route that is open elsewhere in Europe is closed here. Ireland’s Department of Education and Youth runs an English Language Assistant scheme that places Irish assistants in Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Belgium/Wallonia-Brussels, and as of September 2026 Hungary is not on that list. If you want Hungary, you are applying to schools directly rather than through an Irish state placement.
What kind of English teaching work is there in Hungary?
Hungary offers a wide range of TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) opportunities for teachers looking to work across different age groups, language levels, and educational settings. English is highly valued as a skill for both academic and professional success, meaning demand exists in schools, universities, businesses, and private tutoring. While salaries are lower than in Western Europe, the lower cost of living makes Hungary an attractive destination for TEFL teachers seeking a rewarding cultural and teaching experience.
If you are still deciding where to go, our guide to teaching English abroad sets out how hiring seasons and contracts work across Europe.
