What Irish teachers should know first

Jordan is not a kafala state in the Gulf sense — we found no exit-permit requirement making your departure conditional on an employer’s signature — but your right to work is still employer-bound in a way that matters. Jordan’s Ministry of Labour requires every non-Jordanian worker to hold a valid work permit issued in accordance with the Labour Law, and the permit attaches to a specific employer and a specific economic sector. The Ministry’s own regularisation campaign, reported through the state Jordan News Agency in 2025, makes the mechanics visible: it offered employers and non-Jordanian workers across all sectors a fifty per cent exemption from accumulated work permit fees for previous periods, a full exemption from late-payment penalties when renewing an expired permit or transferring a worker between employers, and it expressly permitted the transfer of non-Jordanian workers between economic sectors and activities subject to conditions. Two practical lessons follow. Moving between employers or sectors is possible but is a formal ministry process, not a private arrangement. And an expired or unpaid permit accrues fees and fines against you personally, which is why the Ministry had to run an amnesty at all. Confirm in writing, before you fly, that your school is applying for a permit in your name and is paying for it.

We are not publishing a Jordanian minimum wage figure, and the reason is straightforward. Jordan’s minimum wage is set by the Tripartite Committee for Labour Affairs, a body convened under the Ministry of Labour, and a figure of JD 290 a month effective from 1 January 2025 is widely reported. We could not find it stated on a Jordanian government page on the review date of 8 September 2026 — the Ministry of Labour’s own site returned no such page to us — and several of the outlets carrying it give conflicting effective dates. A number reported everywhere and confirmed nowhere official is not a number we will print as fact. If it bears on your decision, put it to the Jordanian Embassy or to the Ministry of Labour directly. Nor is there an audited average salary for English teachers in Jordan on any official record we could locate, so treat every specific monthly teaching figure you see quoted for Amman as an estimate someone has built from job adverts.

On currency, we quote Jordanian dinars and stop there. The dinar is not covered by European Central Bank reference rates, so any euro conversion we published would be our own arithmetic against a rate we cannot verify against an official reference. Where you see a euro figure quoted for Jordan, treat it as approximate; the dinar figure in your contract is the reliable one, and you should convert on the day at your own bank’s rate.

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs rates Jordan Avoid Non-Essential Travel, the second-highest of its four security ratings, on advice still current at 7 August 2026 and last updated on 16 April 2026. A separate DFA consular update on the Gulf and Middle East, last updated 31 March 2026, strongly advises Irish citizens against non-essential travel to Jordan alongside several neighbouring states, and notes that regional airspace and transit have been disrupted. That is a materially heavier warning than the Department applies to Egypt or Morocco, it reflects the regional security picture rather than anything specific to teaching, and it is the single thing we would most want an Irish reader to check for themselves at ireland.ie before committing to a contract, because it can change in either direction.

The Department’s general guidance is also worth reading rather than skipping, because some readers carry more legal exposure than others. Its Local Laws and Customs page notes that homosexuality and homosexual activity is illegal in many countries and that drinking in public is often prohibited; its LGBTIQ+ page notes that where such relations are unlawful the penalties can be heavy, and that a same-sex partnership may not be recognised while you travel; and its guidance for female travellers notes that local laws and customs can place legal impediments on a woman’s movement and make it substantially harder to report and seek redress for violence.
