Uruguay’s national minimum wage is 25,383 pesos a month from 1 July 2026, set by decree and published by the Ministerio de Trabajo y Seguridad Social. Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs confirms Irish citizens need no visa for tourism, up to 90 days, and Uruguay’s own migration authority lists Irish ordinary passports as visa-exempt.

What Irish teachers should know first

Both sides agree on the entry position, which is reassuring. Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs states there are no visa requirements for Irish citizens travelling to Uruguay for touristic purposes, up to 90 days. Uruguay’s Dirección Nacional de Migración, part of the Ministerio del Interior, publishes a Régimen de visas de admisión table, last updated 19 August 2025, which lists Irlanda under pasaporte común as No necesita Visa. The same table notes that nationals of countries not on the list need a prior consular visa, so being on it matters. You should carry a passport with at least six months’ validity and one blank page.

Tourist entry is not permission to work. In Uruguay, residency is the authorisation that lets a foreign national reside, study and work, and it is granted by the Dirección Nacional de Migración. Temporary residency covers stays of more than 180 days but less than two years, which is the natural fit for a one-year teaching contract. There is also a route that is genuinely useful and that guides written for Americans rarely mention: the Hoja de Identidad Provisoria, or provisional identity card, which allows you to work in the country for a maximum of 180 days, renewable for a further 180, under Decreto 238/022. Uruguay applies the same document to digital nomads. If you are testing the water for a semester rather than committing to a full residency application, that is the mechanism to ask a school about by name.

On pay, we can give you the statutory floor and not much more, and we would rather say so than pad it out. Uruguay’s Salario Mínimo Nacional was set by decree of the Poder Ejecutivo on 26 December 2025 in two steps: 24,572 pesos a month from 1 January 2026, then 25,383 pesos a month from 1 July 2026, as published by the Ministerio de Trabajo y Seguridad Social. The July figure is the one in force as at 8 September 2026. That floor is worth knowing because local-contract teaching often sits near it. We do not publish an audited TEFL salary range for Uruguay, because as at 8 September 2026 we have not been able to source one to an official body, and we will not print a number we cannot stand behind. We also do not give a euro equivalent: the Uruguayan peso sits outside European Central Bank reference-rate coverage, so any euro figure would be an unverified approximation. Ask a school for the peso figure and convert on the day.
