What Irish teachers should know first

The travel advice. Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs rates Uzbekistan High Degree of Caution, the second of its four ratings, last updated 2 July 2025 and still current when we checked on 8 September 2026. The Department describes that tier as covering countries with additional risks such as serious crime, terrorism, disease or extreme weather, and notes that many Irish people visit countries at this rating safely each year. It is a rating you plan around, not one you cancel over.

Entry is easy. Working is not the same thing. The Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in London lists Ireland among the countries with a visa-free regime for stays of up to 30 days. That covers a visit, an interview or a school trial — it does not confer the right to be paid. For employment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan specifies that a visa application submitted by an inviting organisation must include “a certificate of authorization to engage in labor activity issued to the proposed person by the Agency for Foreign Labor Migration under the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations of the Republic of Uzbekistan”. In plain terms: the school invites you, the Agency authorises you to work, and only then does the consular visa follow. If a recruiter tells you the 30-day visa-free entry is enough to start teaching, they are wrong, and the exposure is yours.

The demand is real and it is state-driven. This is not a market invented by TEFL marketing. At a meeting on school education chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on 9 September 2025, the Office of the President reported that in more than a thousand Uzbek schools where foreign language speakers work, the number of students gaining language certificates had risen 2.5 times in a single year, and that the government intended to expand foreign-language teaching further on the model of developed countries. Uzbekistan has been running national foreign-language reform since 2019, when the President instructed that a new system of foreign language teaching be built and set the target that school, lyceum, college and university graduates be fluent in at least two foreign languages.

What the money looks like — with a clear health warning. The same presidential readout of 9 September 2025 recorded that over 60,000 Uzbek teachers who are actively raising their professional level receive a wage of 10–12 million soums per month. That is roughly €700–850 approx. at informal market rates — the Uzbek som falls outside European Central Bank reference-rate coverage, so this euro figure is not verified against an official reference rate. Read that figure for what it is: pay for well-qualified Uzbek state-school teachers on top allowances, not a quoted salary for a foreign hire, which is usually negotiated separately and often includes housing. We hold no audited figure for what an incoming TEFL teacher in Uzbekistan is paid, and we will not publish one we cannot source. Ask for the gross monthly figure in soums, in writing, and ask separately what is covered on top. That absence is dated 8 September 2026.
