Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs rates Ukraine Do Not Travel, its highest level of warning, in advice updated 11 August 2026. The Department tells Irish citizens already in Ukraine to consider leaving if it is safe to do so, and says its ability to provide consular assistance there is extremely limited. Do not travel to Ukraine to teach English.

What Irish teachers should know first

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs uses a four-tier scale: Normal Precautions, High Degree of Caution, Avoid Non-Essential Travel, and Do Not Travel. Ukraine is at Do Not Travel, the top of that scale. The Department’s Ukraine advice was updated on 11 August 2026 and marked still current at 12 August 2026. Its wording is unambiguous: you should not travel to this country or territory; if you are already in this location you should consider leaving if it is safe to do so; the Department’s ability to provide consular assistance to Irish citizens in this location is extremely limited. That is the position an Irish reader should meet before any other information on this page.

Two practical consequences follow. Travel and health insurance policies commonly exclude cover for a country under a Do Not Travel advisory, so if you are considering any travel to Ukraine for any reason, get your insurer’s position in writing before you go rather than after. And consular limits are real limits: the Department is telling you in advance that if something goes wrong, the help available will be much less than you would expect elsewhere.

A legal route to work still exists on paper, and it is worth stating accurately rather than pretending otherwise. The State Migration Service of Ukraine (dmsu.gov.ua) continues to document temporary residence permits issued to foreigners who have arrived in Ukraine for the purpose of employment, among other grounds. The existence of that administrative route does not change the Department of Foreign Affairs position, and we are not presenting it as an invitation. We publish no salary figure for Ukraine: we hold no audited figure, and the Ukrainian hryvnia sits outside European Central Bank reference-rate coverage, so we do not publish a euro equivalent either.

If what drew you to this page was Eastern Europe rather than Ukraine specifically, the honest advice is to look at Poland or the Czech Republic instead. Both are EU member states where an Irish citizen has an automatic right to live and work, both have established language-school sectors, and neither carries a Do Not Travel warning.

You’ll find the infrastructure lacking in comparison to what you’re used to, as it is in many cheap Eastern European countries, but once you have got used to it, life can be very enjoyable as an English teacher in Ukraine. Unfortunately, you will also get used to expecting a lot of red tape and piles of paperwork every time you try to accomplish anything. Also, some areas of Ukraine are deemed risky for travellers; please check with your embassy for the most up-to-date information before applying for jobs in Ukraine. Finally, it may be tough to get things done without knowing some Ukrainian or Russian, so it’s not the most straightforward area to get by in.
