TEFL jobs in Venezuela

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs rates Venezuela Do Not Travel, its highest warning, last updated 1 July 2026, and states that its ability to provide consular assistance to Irish citizens there is extremely limited. We do not recommend Venezuela as a teaching destination. The description further down this page is well over a decade out of date.

What Irish teachers should know first

The official Irish position. Venezuela carries a Do Not Travel rating from Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs — the top of its four-tier scale, above Normal Precautions, High Degree of Caution and Avoid Non-Essential Travel. The advice was last updated on 1 July 2026 and was still current when we checked it on 8 September 2026. The Department’s definition of that tier reads: “Due to armed conflict, natural disaster, disease, civil unrest or other life-threatening reasons we advise that you cancel any plans to travel to this country.” Its Venezuela page adds that if you are already there you should consider leaving if it is safe to do so, and that its ability to provide consular assistance to Irish citizens in Venezuela is extremely limited. Venezuela is one of only two destinations in our entire guide library at this rating.

Insurance. The Department notes that for countries at this rating comprehensive travel insurance covering your planned activities may simply not be available. A teaching contract does not change that, and no employer indemnity replaces it.

What we could not source, and are therefore not publishing. We could not verify a current Venezuelan national minimum wage, a current teaching salary range, or the current work-visa procedure against any official Venezuelan government publication as at 8 September 2026. Figures circulating for Venezuelan pay come from news outlets and recruitment sites rather than from a government source we can cite, and the Venezuelan bolívar sits outside European Central Bank reference-rate coverage, so no euro conversion here could be verified against an official rate. Rather than repeat an unsourceable number, we are recording the gap and dating it. If you see a confident Venezuelan TEFL salary quoted anywhere, ask where it came from.

It was written years ago, refers to the late President Hugo Chávez, who died in 2013, and describes a country and a job market that no longer exist in the form set out. How was teaching in Venezuela described before this page was corrected?

Are you feeling a little daring? Why not try to teach English in Venezuela, one of Latin America’s most picturesque countries on earth? Surprisingly, there are a lot of teaching positions open in this South American country despite the civil unrest. This is because Hugo Chavez, the late president, spent the majority of his 14 years in office assisting the poor, particularly in the areas of health care and education. Therefore, English is an important resource in this fast-rising nation, despite recent rocky political relations between the US and Venezuela, which means that teaching English in Venezuela could be the dream job you have been looking for.

Venezuela is a fantastic place for TEFL teachers to obtain experience while taking in the culture of Latin America and its spectacular natural wonders. Angel Falls, the tallest waterfall in the world, and the warm, azure seas of the Caribbean Sea are both found in Venezuela. The beaches offer crystal clear waters, and in general, the climate is good. The country has borders with Guayana on the east side, Columbia on the west and Brazil right below it. It is also a great base from which to hop over to the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Venezuela has vast natural gas reserves and is also a global oil exporter; in fact, they are the fifth-largest. You will find that many jobs require you to teach English in Venezuela to adults in the business world who have to deal with English-speaking clients.

Where should you go instead?

If what drew you here was Latin America rather than Venezuela specifically, two countries in the same region carry the Department of Foreign Affairs’ lowest rating, Normal Precautions: Chile (last updated 10 August 2026) and Argentina (last updated 6 May 2026). Depending on the institution, foreign teachers could earn between €400 and €600 per month in pay teaching English in  Venezuela.  Additionally, the majority of English teachers work part-time jobs, and private tutoring for extra spending money is not unusual. But, of course, you do not have to teach English exclusively; there are other part-time jobs on offer to top up your income.

Venezuela often has cheaper living expenses than nations like Chile or Argentina in South America. So although there is a lot of inflation here, it should be pretty simple for an ex-pat teaching English in Venezuela to obtain housing and a job.

Since it can be challenging to find accommodation in some locations, it is common for schools to offer housing as a perk to English teachers in Venezuela.
