Your Teaching Experience

There are two main teaching options in South Korea, depending on your eligibility, each offering a unique classroom experience and schedule.

Private language centres (Hagwons)

Hagwons offer English classes as either a supplement to public schooling or a full alternative. Class sizes are typically 8–15 students, allowing for interactive and personalised teaching.

Supported lesson delivery

Teachers have access to internal systems where lesson plans and resources are shared, meaning minimal lesson planning is required compared to other teaching environments.

Public school teaching

Public schools are students’ main day-to-day learning environment. Teachers usually work across 1–3 schools per week, depending on the province, to complete their teaching schedule.

Structured school hours

Working hours are typically Monday to Friday, during mornings and afternoons, offering a consistent weekday routine.

Larger classes with in-class support

Public school class sizes are usually 20–30 students. You’ll have the support of a South Korean teaching assistant in the classroom, though more lesson planning is required compared to private language centres.
